Piata Unirii & Centru Civic

The Civic Centre extends from Piata Muncii in the east to the JW Mariott hotel in the west and represents almost a fifth of the total area of the city: an area which was entirely rebuilt in the 1980s. The centrepiece is of course the Casa Poporului, Europe's largest building and very much the most infamous building in Romania, although the real focal point of the area is Piata Unirii, one of Europe's largest public squares. For visitors, much of the charm of the area is discovering those small pockets which survived the bulldozers, such as the Antim Monastery (hidden behind Bulevardul Unirii's monumental blocks) or the remnants of Bucharest's Jewish District around Strada Iuliu Baraschi.

Getting There

Metro to Piata Unirii, or to Izvor for the Casa Poporului. Bus No. 104 runs almost the full length of Bulevarduls Decebal and Unirii.
