Gudauri

The best ski resort in Georgia!

share

In winter, the premier place to play is high in the majestic Caucasus Mountains, 120 kilometres from Tbilisi. Gudauri is Georgia’s main snow resort with over 50 kilometres of prepared runs, 60% of which are rated intermediate and 20% expert. There are five chair lifts and a gondola, servicing terrain from 1990m right up to 3007m. The southern aspect of most of the slopes mean they are often bathed in sunlight and with incredible views over the largely uninhabited Caucasus mountains.

The altitude and prevailing weather patterns ensures great snow coverage throughout its season, which runs from December until mid April. The runs are rarely crowded, particularly mid-week, and the snow quality is excellent. Our editor has written about snow resorts all over the world and Gudauri is one of his personal favourites.

If your budget and skills stretch to it, there are big-mountain heli operations that offer some superb heli-accesed skiing and snowboarding. Heliskir offers a day of 3 drops for around €500 per person.

Gudauri rescue service: (+995) 790 21 11 00.
Rescue VHF frequency: 134 - 174 MHz, 5 watts power. They use direct channel and the other through a repeater, which allows to cover all Gudauri. You should ask for access code to the channel, otherwise they can’t hear you.
