Verkadefabriek Photocourtesy Mieke van Wanrooij’s-Hertogenbosch is, together with four other Brabant region cities, a candidate for becoming cultural capital of Europe.
In 2018 the Netherlands (together with Malta) may nominate one of the two cities. The other Dutch cities which have become candidates next to the five from Brabant are Almere, the Hague, Utrecht and Maastricht.
Only in 2014 will there be an official appointment by the European Union. Preparations by the candidate cities have already started and until 2012 these cost on average between two and four million euros.
After possible appointments these costs can rise to around €80 million, of which the city needs to raise at least €20 million itself. The rest comes from the province, sponsors and the country.
