Sports in ’s-Hertogenbosch
’s-Hertogenbosch is a true sports city. Whether you like rugby, basketball, ice hockey, or football, you'll find what you’re looking for here.
The buff men of The Dukes (rugby) and the beautiful women of Hockey Club ’s-Hertogenbosch are two of the top teams in the Netherlands. The Eiffel Towers basketball club is also among the best in the country and has ranked high in the past in European competitions. Football club FC Den Bosch and ice hockey team Red Star Eagles aren't in the nation's top leagues in their respective sports, but a mere one level lower.
The Dukes rugby club was founded in 1974 and in 2008 they were finally allowed to call themselves Dutch champions. The Dukes usually play their home matches on Sundays at 14:30. The team also boasts a large number of prominent international players, so their matches are never boring.
For the past 73 years, Hockey Club s-Hertogenbosch has been one of the most prominent teams in the Netherlands. Its modern hockey complex draws in crowds of at least 2,000 fans each week and both the women’s and men’s teams consist of a large number of international stars.
Basketball isn't the most popular sport in the Netherlands, but the Eiffel Towers has been one of the biggest teams within the country’s borders since its founding in 1952, when it was called EBBC Den Bosch. Initial triumphs were celebrated in the ‘Vinkenkamp’ sports centre, but since 1982 the ‘Maaspoort’ has been their home court.
With names like Seedorf, Bergkamp, Kluivert, Robben, Van Nistelrooy, Van Basten, Van Persie, Van der Sar and many other 'Vans' , it's no secret that football is king in the Netherlands.
Unfortunately FC Den Bosch currently plays in the second highest division, but that doesn't detract locals from supporting their home team. In the few decades since the club's founding, the team's blue and white have made it to the premier league, but their stay at the highest level has never lasted long. It may, however, interest you to know that ex-Manchester United and ex-Real Madrid superstar Ruud van Nistelrooy (currently at Málaga
in Spain) began his illustrious career at FC Den Boschback in 1994.
Almost 4,000 spectators visit the fortnightly matches at the cosy 8,500-capacity stadium.
Ice hockey club Red Eagles also aren't exactly at the top of their game and their days of glory remain in the distant past, as their last title was gained in 1967. Club games are held in the beautiful covered Sportiom from October to March.
In addition to these ‘s-Hertogenbosch sports clubs, the city also regularly organises other sporting events. Indoor Brabant is a large international horse show spanning several days that has taken place at the Brabanthallen every March for the past 43 years. The Unicef Open (formerly Ordina Open) is an international grass tennis tournament which is seen by many top tennis players as the ideal leg up to Wimbledon. The centre court is in Rosmalen, a large, nearby village that was annexed by the ’s-Hertogenbosch municipality a few years ago. Furthermore, the city council has worked hard to create the Flik-Flak Hall in 2008, which is a much more serious affair than its name would imply. This multifaceted and complete sports facility at Marathonloop 7 is home to more than 30 different sporting disciplines.
Each sport has its own hall within the building, which has been designed especially for the discipline concerned.Unfortunately, not all schedules were ready as we went to print, but here are matches you shouldn't miss:
