Sticks and stones
In other countries, the mere mumbling of swear words like 'klootzakken', 'kankerlijers', 'losers' and 'sukkels' (which are all impossible to translate) to a police officer would be sufficient for at least a night in jail... and probably a sound beating, too. But in the Netherlands things are different. A female student from Groningen was acquitted recently after she had uttered these offensive words out loud to an officer of the law, during a night out. However, the highest legal body in the Netherlands, the Hoge Raad (the High Council), did not agree with the verdict given at a lower level of the justice system and decreed that 'police officers should not be overly sensitive'. But in yet another odd twist, they decided to punish the student anyway. To be on the safe side, it's probably best to keep any negative opinions of the cops to yourself while in Holland.
