The so-called fun fair or kermis is perhaps Tilburg's most characteristic and endearing symbol and it also happens to be the country's biggest. It has the latest and most spectacular rides as well as the nostalgia of decades past and is popular entertainment at its best. The annual fair will be held for ten days in the centre of Tilburg between July 22 and 31. More than one million people visit this colourful event every year and the tradition has been in existence for over 440 years! In fact, the city council considers Kermis so important that it has nominated the fair to be listed as a UNESCO protected intangible heritage event.
