Korça food

When visiting Korça, it would be a crime to leave without tasting some of the local delicacies that the city and region are famous for. The Albanian staples of roast piglet, cosset and lamb are popular here, as are all manner of pickled plants like cabbage, aubergine, cucumbers, tomato, and tomatoes stuffed with cabbage, spices and peppers, etc. Here's our hitlist of south Albanian snacks.

Lakror – known as byrek elsewhere in Albania, lakror is a home made savoury pie with inside it spinach, onions, tomatoes, pumpkin, leek or other vegetables. It sometimes comes stuffed with yogurt and gjizë (an Albanian type of yoghurt) or meat. In the Korça region lakror is served as a main dish and is washed down with dhallë, a refreshing and surprisingly tasty salty yoghurt drink, also called ayran in Turkey.

Kolloface – Sausage made with pork or cosset meat, leek and spices.

Kërnacka or qofte – meatballs made with pork or cosset meat with spices.

Koran and belushkë fish – A Pogradec speciality, as these species only occur in rare deep tectonic lakes like Ohrid and Baikal. Various styles are possible, but a popular and unique one is Tavë me koran; fish roasted with onions, two or three bay leaves and lake water. Belushkë is available cooked the same way but without the lake water.
