When this fortress was built in the 6th century, Albania was but an outpost on the western fringe of the Byzantine Empire. The fortress is the place where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, and formed the heart of Tirana. About all that's left of the fortress above ground is a 6m-high Ottoman-era  wall, covered in vines. The recently uncovered wall foundations will be incorporated into the pedestrianised street.
