When this fortress was built in the 6th century, Albania was but an outpost on the western fringe of the Byzantine Empire. The fortress the place where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, and formed the heart of Tirana. About all that's left of the fortress above ground is a 6m-high Ottoman-era wall, covered in vines. In late 2008, archeologists uncovered the extensive fortress foundations that will soon be incorporated into the pedestrianised street.
