Despite the former Communist regime’s total ban on religion starting in 1967 in which all 2169 religious buildings in Albania were closed and religious leaders of every faith persecuted, imprisoned, tortured and murdered, contemporary Albania has witnessed something of a religious revival since the regime change of 1991. As Tirana’s skyline suggests, the Albanian capital is home to believers from a number of faiths including both Sunni and Bektashi Muslims, Catholics and members of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania.
