Often performing for beer and cigarettes during the siege, when most artists and performers had fled the city, these days the Sarajevo War Theatre (SARTR) is a successful professional theatre company with an international reputation. During the war the company gave over 2000 performances, often in the most difficult of conditions, as part of the ‘theatre against death’ motive that lay at the heart of its formation and existence.
