At the centre of the Unification Square this monument was erected to the remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and the autonomous region of Eastern Rumelia on the 6th of September 1885. The monument presents the Mother-Country with the laurel headdress of victory stretched in her hands. Her two wings symbolize the two regions brought together. The statue is a creation of Velichko Minekov.
Seen from a distance but even more impressive if you take yourself up to Bunardzik Hill. Commemorating the liberation of Bulgaria by the Russian army from the Nazis Alyosha looks out over Plovdiv as if he is protecting the city for years to come. The monument dates from the mid fifties of the last century and is a combined work of Radoslavov, Zankov, Kozev and Topalov. Go up the hill via the street or more exciting via one of the multiple paths and overlook Plovdiv together with Alyosha.
