I disagree with the above, if a foreign power occupies your country, supresses your people and puts up a monument to celebrate what they have done you have every right to remove it. As a tourist I like seeing the Soviet monuments in the likes of Riga, Sofia and Bratislava in their original settings but if I were a citizen of these countries who lived under soviet occupation I would like them placed in less prominent positions like the Estonians and Hungarians have done - although you have to remember that some of these monuments commemerate Soviet war dead which is something that has to be considered.Tony

You can't go around destroying monuments just because it's a new decade, a new regime. Otherwise the pyramids would be demolished, along with other intriguing monuments. The Taliban destroyed the Buddha and we all gasped. This monument in Sofia, which I missed on my visit there, are the sorts of things that many people want to see for what they were. Budapest removed statues but saved them and now they attract visitors to their place in "Statue Park". Personally, I prefer to see monuments in the original environment, not in a "park museum".Alston
