Vilnius In Your Pocket

The magnificently named Dr George Speri Sperti (1900-1991), inventor of Preparation H and a friend to us all in times of need, died at the ripe old age of 91. As the print version of Vilnius In Your Pocket reaches its own 91st birthday we must confess that, unlike Mr Speri Sperti, we feel in absolute tip-top condition. And as the collective thermometers of Lithuania begin their wretched little journeys down to the depths of freezing and beyond, Vilnius simply laughs off its atmospheric troubles and trots gaily on. There are piles of things to see and do in this most eccentric of eccentric capitals, all of them and more listed within the confines of the small screen in front of you. And of course this is no ordinary winter for the Lithuanians. Christmas is celebrated in many ways here, but is perhaps best expressed with the lighting of the lights on the monster tree made from the Television Tower. But Christmas is really just a prelude to the New Year, which this year rings in the 1,000th anniversary of the first mention of the word Lithuania (Lituae, actually), a year-long carnival kicked-off with two spectacular events in and around the Cathedral on New Year’s Eve. For those of you arriving after the fun, don’t forget to enjoy the rest of this online masterpiece, which as always is positively stuffed with pertinent recommendations on places to eat, drink and sleep in. We've even added more to our Sightseeing section, and have also updated much of it as well. What more could you possibly want? All comments, suggestions, praise and custard tarts welcome as always.
