Crickets
On a hot summer day, the air on Brač is filled with the deafening screech of crickets. These little fellows look similar to grasshoppers, but are usually brownish. They produce sound by drawing one wing, which has a serrated bottom edge, along the other. Crickets are numerous on islands like Brač which are covered in Mediterranean scrub, pine and olive which provide shelter. Their song for many of us is definitive of soporific summer days. The hotter the weather is, the faster crickets chirp, which is why it’s possible to measure the air temperature by the rate of their screeches. And thankfully, this means that their song becomes a soothing sonata once night falls.
