Amazing but true, the railway system does not serve Dubrovnik. Inter-railers may consider the Zagreb-Ploče train, travelling via Bosnia and Herzegovina and visiting towns such as Banja Luka, Mostar and Sarajevo. Normal people would probably prefer to avoid this 13-hour odyssey and travel to Split, then continue south by coach, especially since the Zagreb-Split fast train now takes less than six hours, or you can take the sleeper.

Drivers can rest up and escape tourist traffic by loading their car on a night train at 22:55 (149.04kn - 213.04kn, plus the price of a passenger ticket) travelling to Split and then continuing south. However, since the Zagreb-Split motorway has reduced journey times to about 5 hours (traffic permitting), many people choose to drive or take the coach. A final touring option is the Ploče-Sarajevo-Osijek-Budapest route, which takes the best part of 17 hours.
