Osijek In Your Pocket
Osijek, on the River Drava, is the largest city in eastern Croatia. Of all cities in Croatia it's the greenest, with 17 parks in all, so you'll find no shortage of places to take a break in the heart of the city amid greenery and shade. Osijek also has a wonderful
riverside promenade, a very pleasant and highly popular outdoor swimming pool and straight wide roads which are perfect for cycling. This part of the country with its mighty rivers is also ideal for
anglers. Osijek also is a great destination for lovers of architecture: its „
Tvrđa“ or Citadel is an extensive complex of beautifully preserved buildings built in the Baroque style by the Habsburgs. The Tvrđa is where you'll find many of the city's cultural institutions such as the
Slavonian Museum, the
Archeological Museum and the
Permanent Exhibition of Water Life. It's also a place where Osijek's young at heart like to go out to party. Osijek's surroundings are well worth exploring: head for region of Baranja and you'll find
Kopački rit, perhaps Croatia's most significant Nature Park, a fragile wetland of great beauty, and a host of
agritourism facilities in pretty, rural villages where you can explore the vineyards and taste
local wines. Bearing all of this in mind, it's perhaps surprising that Osijek is still not considered one of Croatia's main tourist destinations, but much is being done to develop the region's potential. That's why we recommend you visit now, when you can travel at your own pace and luxuriate in the exceptionally hospitable welcome of the Slavonian people.
