Business future
Unlike Croatian cities that benefit from the influx of tourists stampeding to enjoy the Dalmatian coast and Istrian peninsula, Osijek does not have the
benefit of tourist dollars and euros being pumped into its economy every summer. For this reason, the economy in Osijek has been sluggish, but several key developments could serve as the impetus for a renewed Osijek.
Croatia loves its football, but Osijek has been given even more incentive to
become interested, as it has been named a potential candidate to co-host the 2012 FIFA Eurocup along with other Croatian and Hungarian cities. 2012 might seem like the distant future, but the necessary development and construction required to prepare the city and its football stadium to host the tournament has some estimates placing the number of new jobs created by the tournament as high as 50,000.Any event as large and prestigious as the Eurocup creates a chain reaction
of investment opportunities. (UEFA) standards require that Osijek's football
stadium be re-vamped, a windfall for Osijek's construction firms. It doesn't
end there. Accommodation will need to be built, renovated and provided for
the thousands that will descend on the city to view the games and transportation options will need to be provided for all of those visitors.
Not to mention the eyes of Europe and much of the world will be focused on
the city, giving it an unprecedented opportunity for tourist promotion. The
final decision about the Eurocup site will be made in Spring 2007.Until then, Osijek, and the city's business future, waits anxiously.Another new development in the city that has its business leaders excited is
the construction of Corridor Vc, a road, rail, river and air traffic corridor that will serve as the official connection between North-Central and Southern Europe. This new connection will place Osijek in the middle of a powerful traffic center intended for efficient transport of goods that will have an impact on business in all of Europe. The development of cargo
terminals near Klisa Airport and the presence of river ports in Osijek, and
the fact that the trip by car into the city will be much easier to accomplish, put an entirely new perspective on the city's economic future. While certainly not as fevered as the rate of growth on the coast, Osijek's hospitality industry is growing steadily, with new hotels being constructed and old hotels being renovated regularly. The completion of Corridor Vc will only serve to augment that growth. These new developments in Osijek's business future could give the city the
chance it needs to become an established center for tourism and culture in the area. Its position in regard to the Kopacki Rit nature park, the wine
roads that zigzag the countryside, several interesting castles and historic
sites and the presence of bed and breakfasts that offer exploration of the
area's cultural and culinary delights already make it one of Croatia's
lesser-known treasures. The Eurocup and Corridor Vc could serve to make it a
better-known one with huge possibilities for growth.
