The Franciscans spearheaded the renewal of Catholic life in Slavonia in the years following the Ottoman occupation, and built this fine monastery church to serve as their spiritual centre. The interior contains a wealth of Baroque and Rococo ornamentation, although it’s the gothic statue of Our Lady of Osijek (Naša Gospa Osječka), a rosy-cheeked Madonna cradling a plump Christ-Child, that draws most in the way of local pilgrims. The accompanying monastery was the site of a theology academy and, after 1735, Slavonia’s first printing press. The reformist Habsburg Emperor Joseph II kicked the Franciscans out of Osijek in 1783, and they had to wait until 1938 to get their property back. To visit the church you should just ring to the door of the monastery and it will be opened for you. Holy mass is at 18:00, on Tue at 07:00 and 18:00 and on Sun at 07:00, 09:00 and 18:00.
