Roughly opposite the main entrance to the Tvrđa district, this neatly manicured stretch of greenery is home to one of Osijek’s best loved monuments. Illuminated by spotlights at night, the life-size Dying Soldier by sculptor Robert Frangeš-Mihanović (1872 - 1940) valiantly brandishes a rifle as his feet buckle beneath him. Intended to commemorate the dead of World War I, it now serves as a memorial to all those who have laid down their lives for the motherland.
