The monks of the Salesian order follow the teachings of St Don Bosco (1815-1888), a priest who dedicated his life to helping and teaching orphaned boys. The buildings of the monastery complex date back to 1892, the chapel for orphans to 1901. The Salesians were invited to Rijeka in 1918 to work with young people, and founded a school and oratory here. The Salesian Classical Grammar School is a highly regarded educational institution which continues this work today on the same site.
