Rijeka's first guest rooms were on the site of today's bar "2 lava" in the 18th century. During the commercial boom after the railway was built, there were 20 hotels here. Today there are only three open for business - a further one is currently being renovated - but things are changing as the city picks up confidence once more. In the meantime, there is no shortage of excellent accommodation in nearby Opatija, a town with over a century of history as a tourist centre.
