There are several legends that pass between the generations in Croatia about the Black Queen. Some of them originate from the Zagreb area, often set in Medvedgrad. Here is one of them…Once upon a time, there was a queen named Barbara. She was called The Black Queen for the simple reason that her beauty shone with such power that it hid from view everything around her. With such beauty, it was no surprise when, at the tender age of nine, her father betrothed her to be married to the powerful King, Sigismund. The young queen of course had nothing further from her mind, and galloped away on her jet-black steed into the forests on Medvednica. Now, people walking there still keep a sharp eye out, because, they say, from time to time the beautiful face of the unhappy Black Queen can still be seen.
