Like Hlapić and Gita - Orphans in Croatia from the late 19th to the early 20th Century
The Croatian School Museum is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first publication of ‘The Marvellous Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice’ by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. This exhibition, created by curator of the museum, Štefka Batinić, will feature orphans in Croatia from the 19th and 20th centuries. Hlapić and Gita are the most famous orphans from Croatian children's literature, appearing in many children’s novels and short stories, by authors who were mostly teachers. Back then, teachers were thought to be the most qualified people to advise children about learning to deal with life’s hardships.
