The slastičarnica is an institution you shouldn’t miss in Zagreb. Slastičarnice are basically temples to all things sweet. You can eat cake and ice cream, and drink coffee, soft drinks or a fitting choice of alcohol. Nik-o-Teen beware: often, you can’t smoke. (These are children-friendly establishments, after all).

In Zagreb you can find a wide range of locally inspired cakes (kremšnite, sweet gibanice, Jelačić kocke), cakes from the days of Austria-Hungary (Sacher torte, Eszterhazy torte) and from the Turkish empire (baklava, urmašice).
