I can resist everything except temptation…

Well, the witty Mr Wilde wouldn’t have lasted long in Zagreb without succumbing to diabetes, dental caries and all the other horrors associated with sweet, sweet sugar.

The slastičarna is an institution you shouldn’t miss in Zagreb. Slastičarne are basically temples to all things sweet. You can eat cake and ice cream, and drink coffee, soft drinks or a fitting choice of alcohol. Nik-o-Teen beware: often, you can’t smoke. (These are children-friendly establishments, after all).

In Zagreb you can find a wide range of locally inspired cakes (kremšnite, sweet gibanice, Jelačić kocke), cakes from the days of Austria-Hungary (Sacher torte, Eszterhazy torte) and from the Turkish empire (baklava, urmašice).

Whatever you choose from the places listed below, you’re sure to get a top sugar buzz. Recommended accompaniments are a glass of water, a coffee, and a Stock brandy if you want the full-on decadent experience.

A tiny little gem (no seating area) hidden in Trešnjevka, we highly recommend you make a trip for a pick’n’mix box of their tiny teacakes: they are ultra-fresh and truly delicious. They make home-made bajadera – the taste is something like chocolate fudge. Most slastičarne sell rather similar cakes but this one is quite different: one of their celebration cakes will certainly delight. Call or drop by to order.
