Gablec

Outside some restaurants you might spot a sign saying “Gableci”. “What are these?” we wondered, imagining some small pigeon-like bird. Wrong! “Gablec” is a local word meaning something like “elevenses”. The custom dates back to when people started work too early for a proper breakfast, so around ten-ish, they would pop out for something to keep them going 'til lunchtime. Nowadays, people eat gablec as a light lunch, choosing from a handful of cheap, home-made dishes, such as goulash, sarma (stuffed cabbage) or grah (bean stew). Here's where you can scoff on the hoof.
