Croatian

Croatian cuisine is very often a complex mix of continental and coastal delicacies. Italian, Turkish and Hungarian accents often sneak themselves into the mix also... and these are only to name a few. Restaurants listed here are most indicative of continental Croatia, which is to say they're heavy on game dishes and simple vegetable accompaniment. Some useful terms: čevapčići (spiced meat patties), divlja guska (wild goose), divlja patka (wild duck), fazan (pheasant), govedina (beef), janjetina (lamb), jelen (deer), kobasice (sausages), lungić (pork fillet), miješano meso (mixed grill of meats), patka (duck), pljeskavica (hamburger), pršut (ham), srnetina (venison), veprovina (wild boar), zečetina (rabbit).

A fairly large venue with an overwhelming choice of fish, scampi, mussels and squid. We believe its menu is well worth the hike to its location on the edge of Zagreb's city limits. This Adriatic doppelganger is abundant not only in its warmth but also in its portions and tastiness. A rich assor [...]

Authentic Dalmatian cuisine as we recommend the beef and lamb roast cooked in the traditional ‘ispod peke’ style. The prosciutto, homemade sausages and freshly baked bread are to die for Fresh deserts and a proud wine selection make for a fine way to dine. Also at Bencekovićeva 28. [...]

A delightful restaurant in the suburb of Sesvete, just 15 minutes drive from Zagreb. It’s something like a converted barn, with a superb raftered dining room, where they offer up all kinds of meals with local and international accents (such as fondue, flambeed dishes and chateaubriand). The emphasis is definitely on meat – they have a game section on the menu, and frogs’ legs.

Ivica and Marica’s cakes are to die for: intensely delicious, using only natural, healthy ingredients. So it’s great news that they’ve opened a restaurant along the same lines: homestyle recipes in a Hansel and Gretel cottage atmosphere. Also at Barčev trg 16 ( J-5, [...]

A Zagreb institution since 1893. The name means “At the Brewery”, because, beer-loving friends, the restaurant is part of the Ožujsko brewery! The appropriately named Pauza will give the 30-something business crowd a pause from their working day in a simple interior with a pleasant atmosphere. There are daily specials and tasty desserts (we recommend the cheesecake), all the right size for lunch. And if the return trip to the office isn't particularly pressing, there's a fairly solid wine list to choose from, as well.

Has forged a reputation and a legion of fans for fantastic food and great value. Rustic in style, Pri Zvoncu has a super little shady garden in the peaceful neighbourhood of Vrbik, just round the corner from the British and German embassies. Although they mainly serve inland Croatian cuisine, they do fish specialities on Fridays, and cook beef and lamb ispod peke – a traditional Dalmatian cast iron bell heaped with glowing ash. The excellent wine list includes home-made white wine on tap. Make the trip south of the railway line – you won’t regret it.

Srčeko, in the foothills of Sljeme, was once known as a folksy and romantic escape in a wooden mountain hut that somehow found itself just above Ilica. Now in new hands, the "little heart" has been given a new lease of life.  The interior is now light with flashes of colour, [...]

Below the Zagreb City Museum, it's a great mix of game and seafood dishes served up in a den of brick and darkness that seems to say 'sunlight is overrated'. In the short time since its establishment, this classy konoba has cultivated a reputation for cooking up Croatian dishes precisely the way Croatians like them. Just ask the crowds of return customers packing the place every day.
You can choose either an intimate dining area decked out with antique furniture or a relaxed outdoor patio in which to sample the fare. We can recommend the specialties of the house: vješalica, rolled pork filled with cheese and ham followed up by a succulent piece of baklava. It's definitely worth the stroll north of the center to check this place out. [...]
