Where to eat

Bistro - a café with a short menu of light items (often sandwiches and/or pizza). Buffet - not a place to go to gorge yourself, but merely a version of a café. Kavana/ Bar/Café - a place that serves drinks of the coffee, soft, juice and alcohol variety. Gostionica - inexpensive local cuisine that often amounts to thinner ambiance and variety. A dish du jour (gotova jela) is often featured, and it is less likely to accept credit cards. Restoran/Restauracija - the name restaurant as it is understood everywhere in the world. Pivnica - beer hall with a short grill menu. Pizzeria - Pizza and pasta dishes, inexpensive and speedy. Slastičarnica - dessert city, very informal interiors and drinks.

Croatian eating and drinking establishments are required by law to incorporate a no-smoking section into their interior. The familiar red diagonal slash signal is seen everywhere but is rarely a reflection of smoking enforcement: rows of ashtrays are often generously displayed on tables just below these signs. We've marked those that do not allow any smoking on the premises at all.

Service in Zagreb is typically European, meaning very relaxed and non-intrusive. If you are in a hurry, you are best to discretely attract the attention of your server and state, "Račun, molim" when you are prepared to leave. In those seemingly hopeless cases (they will present themselves) simply walk to the front desk and pay your bill.

Perhaps some kind of statement about the culture, restaurants bend over backwards to direct you to their complaint book. It is often displayed with the same high visibility that a work of fine art might be, and certificates are often framed above it to facilitate your negative commentary. Your waiter is likely to state, 'You did not like your meal' if you leave even a morsel on your plate at the end of a massive meal. Becoming a member of the illustrious Clean Your Plate Club can also produce mixed emotions in many a service staff, they then wondering if the portion they fed you was inadequate.

Horrible service, the waitress looks like she came from a Romanian night club - very much in clash with the supposedly upscale theme of the restaurant. Much of what is listed is not available, like frappes.[...]
