Prague In Your Pocket

Welcome to Prague and we hope our beautiful city offers you something new and interesting to discover. As always, we’ve put together some of the best of the best happening in February and March. Check our events section because whether you like art, opera or roller coasters, something should be there for you. Want to explore more Czech beer? Check out this month's Pocket Watch in which we introduce you to some craft beers and where to find them. And don’t forget Valentine’s Day. Whether you made romantic Prague a destination for the love holiday; or you are just looking for an amorous meal during your visit; have a look at our recommendations.

In February, some of our best athletes will be out of town; visiting Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Czech’s best hopes for a medal come in the form of our hockey team. The national team had a poor showing in 2006 (despite winning the bronze) and we hope Coach Vladimír Růžička, who helped bring home the gold in 1996, will display some golden magic once again. Sixteen players on the roster also play in the US National Hockey League. A couple others; Martina Sáblíková (speed skating) and Lukáš Bauer (cross-country skiing) are also expected to do quite well in Vancouver. While the Olympics should solely be about the love of sport; they hardly ever are. Czech President Václav Klaus and Foreign Minister Jan Kohout won’t be attending the games in protest of the Canadian government re-introducing visa requirements for Czech citizens in July 2009. Prime Minister Jan Fischer will be there though.

The Czech Republic doesn’t have the most green of status among other EU members. In fact; we produce 14 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per person; compared with the EU average of ten tones per capita. Seems our pollution comes mainly from our love of cars, however a planned modernization of a north Bohemia coal plant has upset the citizens of Micronesia. The Pacific island country in desperate danger of disappearing due to rising sea levels officially asked the Czech government not to approve the planned work. They stated the coal plant produces 40 times more carbon dioxide than their entire country. The Czech government said they would take Micronesia’s protest under consideration.

Now get out into the fresh spring air; and enjoy your stay!
