03 State Opera

A fabulous neo-Rococo pile quite unfortunately wedged between the station, National Museum and two busy roads. Built in 1888 for Prague’s German Theatre Association, it is worth a visit for the glamorous gold-and-plush interior and the view of the sumptuous ceiling alone. Operas are usually performed in the original language, with Czech or English subtitles projected above the stage. For tours of the building, contact Prague's tourist office.

Tickets 100 - 1,150Kč.

Not easy to get to because of the motorway in front, the easiest way is to take the metro to Museum station and use the disabled lift to the street, then cross to the Opera House by the underpass.Because the opera house is quite small the view of the stage from the second(highest/cheapest) balcony are excellent and the prices very moderate.(We have never paid more than £15) There is a free cloakroom w.c.and a bar on that level plus the view over the city rooftops is lovely. We check the ballet/opera programme at www.opera.cz before we book our flights to Prague. Book your tickets at the box office. The ladies who sell the tickets are very helpful and even asked my daughter if she had a student union card.
