GDR camping ground

In the summer of 1989, thousands of East Germans on holiday in Prague decided that they would rather not go home. They climbed into the garden of the West German embassy, pitched their tents and were a major embarrasment to the GDR authorities. They were eventually allowed to leave on special trains bound for West Germany and abandoned their East German cars. In honour of their flight, a painted Trabant on giant legs was made by Czech artist David Černý. To catch a glimpse of the statue in the embassy grounds, carry on uphill past the embassy and turn left into the small park.
