Outside it’s all rockeries, winding paths leading nowhere and benches for contemplation. Inside, the warmth of the glasshouse can get uncomfortable but the musty, moistly lush aroma is alluring. Massive primeval plants, aquariums, orchids, a coffee bush and papayas transport you well into the tropics and carnivorous plants are for sale at the entrance. The Cactus Room is home now to a clone of the Methuselah tree, the world’s oldest documented living organism at 4,789 years old.
