Tartu In Your Pocket: Winter/Spring 2008-2009
In case you didn’t already know, Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia, but the largest in terms of student population. This is all thanks to a Swedish king named Gustavus Adolphus, who back in 1632 made a decree that there should be a University built here. Why would a Swedish king make such a proclamation? Well, you see back in those days Tartu, which was called Dorpat, belonged to the Swedish Empire and a very fine gentleman by the name of Johann Skytte convinced the king he should do so. There were very few institutions of higher learning in Northern Europe back then so the founding of a University at Tartu was a pretty big thing.
It was all because of these actions that Tartu managed to grow into the “City of Good Thoughts” that it is today. And speaking of good thoughts, in honour of Tartu’s scientific discoveries and its contributions to the world, we’ve put together a little feature on the subject. Although the inventions are numerous, we’ll highlight just a few of the fantastic innovations that the city has been instrumental in bringing to the world. You can read all about them on here.
Now just in case you were never that into science at school, there are plenty of other things to see and do in Tartu and we can guarantee they won’t involve test tubes or bodily functions. Just one example is the brand new Tasku Centre, which combines high-end shopping, a state-of-the-art cinema, a huge book store and loads of new, great places to eat... okay, you’re right, eating is a bodily function isn’t it. Not into shopping, movies, reading or eating? Well, we’re sure you’ll be able to find something that catches your fancy in Tartu.
