Taxi rip-offs
Tallinn's taxis are somewhat notorious for overcharging - even locals get ripped off. We've heard countless stories about an invisible switch that's hit or bumped to make the meters go at a higher rate. There's no sure-fire way to avoid this unscrupulous practice, but there are precautions you can take. Ask for an estimate of how much the ride will be beforehand. Also, ordering a taxi by phone (see ‘Getting around’) is usually safer, and lets you avoid the 8 – 25kr ‘waiting fee’ that you pay if you catch a taxi on the street. Also see ‘Arriving’ for estimates of how much rides should cost from the airport, etc.
