Established in 1856, the all-important Krenholm textile factory was the key player of Narva's industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, and gave rise to a whole neighbourhood of residential and support buildings. Krenholm's long main building, which dates to the late 19th Century, can be seen along the south end of Joala tn. The factory's hospital (1913) on Haigla tn. is considered an architectural treasure and is still the city's main hospital.
