This striking, neo-Gothic church on the northeast edge of town holds a key place in the hearts of Estonians - it was here in 1884 that the blue, black and white tricolour that would become their national flag was consecrated. The event is depicted in a 1930s-era bas-relief on the front of the church. Though it gets its present shape from a rebuilding in 1889 - 90, the church has a history that goes back centuries. Try to catch a glimpse of the ornate, wood carved interior. In front of the church you'll find a memorial to the country's war for independence. The memorial was put up in 1929, destroyed by the Soviets, and restored in 1989.
