Way out

Have you got a car? These restaurants, while not quite at the edge of the universe, are too far from the centre for a casual drop-in. That said, they're interesting enough for the truly curious visitor or the adventurous expat to make the effort to find them.

Baby Back Ribs & BBQ
You will seriously question what country you're in once you step into this authentically American-style ribs joint. Upholstered booths, bottles of Heinz 57 on the tables and a piped in radio station from Louisiana make it perhaps more American than any place in America. The long menu includes pizzas, milkshakes and burgers, but the steaks and ribs are the stars here. Order the full rack 'monster' and contemplate why Texans are so huge.

Haaarg, maties! The positively sprawling Captain Flint is done up on the inside like a pirate ship, timbers, rigging and all. Most pirate ships probably didn't have fireplaces, saunas and wireless internet, but never mind. The varied menu includes everything from a big pirate kebab to stuffed songbirds with apricots. On weekends a DJ plays retro dance hits so peg-legged sailors can do a jig. [...]

Normally we wouldn't include a pub in this list, but Kamikaze works more like a local restaurant. Plus, unlike most pubs, it's got an airplane parked out back, just in case you miss your taxi (please don't drink and fly though). Food is mostly pub-like, with specialities like Kamikaze soup (spicy tomato soup with meat) and Kamikaze schnitzel. [...]

Lucca
Run by the same people that brought you the award-winning Pegasus restaurant in Old Town, the spacious Lucca has a similarly crisp and professional feel. Here though, the interior is one large room where tables share space with loungey leather sofas to create a relaxed ambience befitting this suburban milieu. A huge yard in back and a carpet of plants on the roof completes the picture. Salads, pastas and grill items are on offer. [...]

Stucco walls and hanging grapevines give this little Spanish restaurant a cosy feel, and a very Spanish menu, tapas and paella included, gives it an air of authenicity. Each dish is marked with area it comes from (Madrid, Valencia, etc). Try the house special, Carne Espanola 'Manolete' (C [...]

Cheap, cheap, cheap compared to similar places in the centre, this Chinese (with a bit of Indian) fast food joint offers loads of big mains in the 59 - 75kr range. Free chopsticks and soy sauce too. Popular for takeaway. Take trolleybus 2 or 3 to the Linnu tee stop. [...]
