Originally built for the 1980 Olympic Games, Pirita TOP SPA was renovated and reopened in 2003 as Tallinn's most sprawling hotel and spa complex. It has ample space for its several shops, a beauty centre, restaurant, casino, pharmacy and optician, to say nothing of its extensive health facilites and several classes of guest rooms. We have stayed here twice and we love it so much we are coming back in 2009.The building is ugly in the extreme, a pure Soviet concrete monstrosity. The breakfasts couldn't be worse, powdered scrambled egg, seeds, stale bread and service that Stalin would be proud of at times.BUT the reception and cleaning staff are charming, the views from the balconies on the sea side are outstanding and for some strange quirky reason you feel happy to be there. There are a few shops in the reception area which sell everything you might have forgotton to pack as well as souveniers.Sitting on the balcony at midnight during the white nights sipping cheap plonk bought in the shop in reception and watching the sunset over the bay is what really turns this hotel from below average to wonderful.
