On a bright, clear, winter’s day, one of the most spectacular views to be found in the Tartu area is the frozen shore of Lake Peipsi, the 3,555km2 body of water that straddles the Estonian-Russian border. The lake is considered one of the best in the world for ice-fishing, and locals, like they have done for generations, can be seen boring holes through the ice and putting their lines through in hopes of catching sparling, pike, pike perch, bream, bass, whitefish and other fish varieties. The best way to witness this activity is to take a drive along the shore between Kallaste and Mustvee, and stop wherever you see people clustered on the ice.
