Piirissaare island

This tiny island makes for a relaxing day-trip getaway, and best yet, you don’t even need a car to get there! The marshy island sits at the near edge of Lake Peipsi, and like other places in the vicinity, it was settled by Old Believers, Russians who fled church reform in their homeland in the 16th century. Also like other places in the vicinity, the land here is used for growing onions. There are three villages on the island, whose current total population is around 100. Even more interesting than the island itself might be the journey there and back.

Getting there In summer a ferry runs from Laiksaar to Piirisaar 1-2 times per day depending on the day of the week. Tickets are €3.20 each way. See www.veeteed.com for details.
