Despite having very Estonian-sounding pelmeenid (dumplings) on the menu, Žen Žen is a surprisingly authentic find in the Tähtvere area, just outside the centre. The few items of décor it has - including a very cool panda clock - are genuine imports, and the great tasting food is in fact prepared by Chinese chefs. If you're on a budget, consider getting one of the heaping platefuls of noodles, available for €3.50-4.80.

I love that place! Food is great. Most of all I love Sweet and Sour Chicken and Squids with Caraway Seeds. And I also like that the portions are big enough for two not like in other Chinese places I ve been. Thats the place I eat every time I happen to be in Tartu! Five out of five.
I wanted it to be good, but it wasn't even serviceable. Ate there at 8pm on a Thursday in mid-June. They were out of rice! I had already decided for noodles, otherwise I would have just left. I just started an antibiotic cure so I was hoping for a zingy, fresh stri-fry. I asked for extra ginger and the waitperson nodded quickly, But I'm not even sure if powdered ginger was added. The fish in spicy sauce was soggy bits of Fillet o' Fish in a undistinguished gravy. The heat, and there wasn't much, came from some cheap cayenne. And the whole thing (entree, noodles and green tea) cost 145 kroons, far more than it would have in Tallinn. One and a half stars out of five.
