One of three branches of the university’s museum (along with Art Museum and Old Observatory), this division is housed in the city’s famous Tartu Cathedral and chronicles the history of the university from its founding in 1632 to the present day. The exhibitions provide an overview of the cathedral's history and its secrets, the story of the university and city. In the physics cabinet, you can learn about optics and colour theory. ‘The Crazy Scientist’s Office' with many hands-on attractions and interactive fun, will intrigue little ones. The museum also has temporary exhibitions.
From May through September, the same ticket will allow visitors to climb the cathedral towers for some great city views.

The exhibitions provide an overview of the cathedral's history and its secrets, the  story of the university and city. In the physics cabinet, one can learn about optics and color theory.

Current and upcoming exhibitions:
Till the end of May you can explore the temporary exhibition “Art or Science” that offers in-depth insight into the relationship between art and science in Estonia. In November the museum opens a new exhibition 'Invisible city. 800 years of the city of Tartu' that takes us back to medieval Tartu. The exhibition focuses on the historical events that marked the birth of the city, as well as the city’s appearance and its inhabitants during the first hundred years.

Open

From May to September open 10:00-18:00, closed Mon. From October through April open 11:00-17:00, closed Mon, Tue. Cathedral towers' viewing platforms are open from May till September, Tue - Sun 10:00 - 18:00. In celebration of Tartu's designation as the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2024, the museum will stay open until 20:24 on Thursdays throughout the summer.

Price/Additional Info

The admission fee is €10 from May to September and €8 from October to April. There is a joint ticket available for the University of Tartu Museum, Old Observatory, and University of Tartu Art Museum for €15. More information about the tickets can be found on the website.
