Köln/Bonn Flughafen (airport) is 17km south of town and is serviced by the S13 S-Bahn train, which departs from Köln Hauptbahnhof every twenty minutes, taking about 20 minutes and costing €2.30. Alternatively, hop on the slower bus 170 from the rear of the station. A taxi to the airport costs around €25 and takes anywhere from 15 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic, making it better to catch the train. The airport is well-organised and efficient. Check-in times at the airport depend on the carrier, but in general it is good practice to arrive at least an hour before your plane leaves. Note that food at the airport is very expensive at almost double the normal going rate, with perhaps only the Burger King outlet charging normal prices. Budget travellers who don't want to spend more on food than on their flight ticket are advised to stock up on food and drinks at a city supermarket. The airport has a small display section filled with curious spy technology - lovers of gadgets should enjoy this strange little showcase.
