Alte Synagoge [Old Synagogue]

Completed in 1913, this was the largest synagogue in Northern Europe and home to a vibrant Jewish community – until it was attacked during the infamous Kristallnacht pogrom in November, 1938. Since restored and preserved, it now serves as a cultural centre and houses permanent exhibits on Jewish life in Essen before and during the war.

Admission free.
