When the opera building was opened in 1880, the exterior looked much like it does today. However, it was hit badly in World War II, and only was reconstructed 40 years later after much ado about how to do it. Visit the Alte Oper for the regular symphony concerts; the opera has moved to the Schauspielhaus.
