Arriving by train

Local and intercity trains all arrive at the Hauptbahnhof in the old (southern) part of the city. At the time of going to press the station was a building site in preparation for the World Cup and everything was closed with the exception of the ticket and information kiosk on the ground floor (Open 07:00 - 19:00, Sat 09:00 - 16:00, Sun 10:00 - 17:00), staffed by friendly, English-speaking employees. By the time this guide is published the station promises toilets, gleaming new shops and ATMs, but if they miss their deadlines find everything you need in the pedestrian precinct directly north of the main building. Access to the U-bahn for travel around the city is down any of the well signposted escalators. Many of the hotels in this guide are within easy walking distance. To order a taxi, call tel. 599 12.
