Beer gardens intro

The Catholic Church might still be the most sacrosanct institution in the Free State of Bavaria, but when temperatures start soaring a different type of communal pew starts filling up - the long wooden beer bench. Bavarian brew is some of the best in the world and there could be no finer setting for savouring it than in the local Biergarten.
Munich's beer gardens will emerge from hibernation around March.

Munich's (and perhaps also the world's) biggest beer garden, with more than 8,000 seats is, surprisingly, the least touristy. Put yourself on the right side of a Löwenbräu and you'll understand why King Ludwig I so enjoyed an afternoon nap here with his mistress, Lola Montez. High up alongside a bicycle track on the River Isar in Munich's poshest neighbourhood, Menterschwaige is a classical leafy beer garde [...]

It's worth venturing some 30km north of Munich to experience this enchanted little Biergarten wedged in the woods between a brewery and a 340-year-old pilgrim's church. The chapel commemorates miracle healer Amalie Hohenester, but most patrons seem more interested in the local li [...]
