Brewery intro
With 40 different types of beer, you’d think you could have a beer taste test at any pub in Munich, but due to the beer brewery ‘mafia’, this is not the case. The powerful Munich six breweries and breweries of surrounding areas control nearly every bar and restaurant’s supply of beer. They have territories that belong to them and force contracts onto locale owners with minimum orders and restrictions of how many other beers are allowed on the premises. In most cases only two types of import bottled beers (like Corona and Budweiser) are allowed outside of the main brand of the sector, and no German competitors. There are some exceptions to this rule, like the Haus der 111 Biere (see
Pubs). The Munich pub-goers are so used to this that when in a pub they only ask for a beer without bothering to ask what kind they have. Every bar must also clearly mark its brewery affiliation outside its door.
