Greek Easter
Easter is a great time of year to visit Athens. Easter Sunday (this year April 4th) is the most important celebration on the Greek calendar (overshadowing Christmas) and will give you the opportunity to experience local culture and vibrant traditions. The customs associated with Easter are dyeing eggs red (symbolizing the blood of Christ), which are then ceremoniously cracked between friends on Easter Sunday, church-going just before midnight on Easter Eve for the exuberant celebrations and dazzling fireworks in honour of the Resurrection of Christ, returning home to a lovely pot of home-made “mageiritsa” (delicious traditional offal and greens soup, ideal for preparing the stomach for the next day’s meat feast following Lent) and enjoying spit-roasted lamb and other delicacies (such as roast offal) to traditional music and dancing on Easter Sunday with the extended family, often in the family abode in the home village.
